Riot Client Error Codes

The Riot Client launches Valorant, League of Legends and TFT, and its errors usually stop you at login. Most are a corrupt client, a stuck service, or a connection block — here's each code and the fix.

Error codes

Error 0 The Riot Client hit an unspecified startup error

Cause: A corrupt Riot Client install or a stuck client process.

Fix:
  1. End all Riot processes in Task Manager (RiotClientServices, LeagueClient, Valorant), then relaunch.
  2. Delete the Riot Client config: %LocalAppData%\Riot Games\Riot Client\Config and relaunch.
  3. Reinstall the Riot Client if it persists.
Error 1 Installation or update failed

Cause: A corrupt or incomplete client/game update.

Fix:
  1. Run the Riot Client as administrator.
  2. Delete the game's partial install and let the client re-download.
  3. Whitelist the Riot folder in antivirus.
Error 43 A system error stopped the client

Cause: A hung Riot Client service or a Vanguard/anti-cheat conflict.

Fix:
  1. Fully close all Riot processes and reboot.
  2. Reinstall Riot Vanguard (see the Vanguard errors page).
  3. Run as administrator.
RC / 'A connection issue occurred' The client can't reach Riot's login servers

Cause: A VPN, firewall block, or a Riot server outage.

Fix:
  1. Check Riot's status page for your region.
  2. Disable VPN and allow RiotClientServices through the firewall.
  3. Flush DNS (ipconfig /flushdns) and restart the router.
VAN 0 Vanguard reported a generic error to the client

Cause: The Vanguard anti-cheat crashed or needs a restart.

Fix:
  1. Reboot the PC so Vanguard reloads.
  2. Reinstall Vanguard from Programs and Features.
  3. See the dedicated Riot Vanguard error steps for VAN codes.
Riot Client won't open / stuck on splash The launcher hangs on a blank or splash screen

Cause: Corrupt client data, a wrong system clock, or an overlay conflict.

Fix:
  1. Set Windows date/time to automatic.
  2. Delete the Riot Client Data/Config folders in %LocalAppData%\Riot Games and relaunch.
  3. Close overlays (Discord, RivaTuner) and run as administrator.

Fixes that work for most Riot Client errors

  1. Fully quit the client from the system tray (right-click › Exit), then reopen it — a half-loaded client throws most generic errors.
  2. Restart your PC and router, and on Windows flush DNS (Command Prompt: ipconfig /flushdns).
  3. Update or reinstall the client to the latest version — many 'connection' or 'version' errors are just an out-of-date client.
  4. Temporarily disable VPN and add the client as an exception in your antivirus/firewall, then retry.
  5. Check the service's official status page or its X/Twitter — if the servers are down for maintenance there is no local fix; wait it out.

FAQ

How do I fix Riot Client Error 0?

Open Task Manager and end every Riot process (RiotClientServices, LeagueClient, VALORANT), then relaunch. If it returns, delete the Riot Client config folder at %LocalAppData%\Riot Games\Riot Client\Config so the client rebuilds it, and reinstall the Riot Client as a last step. Error 0 is a corrupt or stuck client, not your account.

Why does the Riot Client say a connection issue occurred?

The client can't reach Riot's servers — usually a VPN, firewall block, or a regional outage. Check Riot's status page for your region, disable any VPN, allow RiotClientServices through your firewall, flush DNS with ipconfig /flushdns, and restart your router.
