Steam Deck Error Codes

Steam Deck errors are mostly network, storage, or SteamOS update problems rather than hardware faults. Here's what each common code and message means and the fix that clears it.

Error codes

Error Code 118 Unable to connect to the server

Cause: The Deck can't reach Steam — a weak Wi-Fi signal, router issue, or Steam outage.

Fix:
  1. Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or forget and rejoin the network.
  2. Move closer to the router; the Deck's antenna is weaker than a laptop's.
  3. Check the Steam status page for an outage.
Error Code 105 Unable to connect to the server (DNS)

Cause: A DNS resolution failure on the current network.

Fix:
  1. Restart the router and the Deck.
  2. In network settings, set a manual DNS (1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8).
  3. Try a different network or a phone hotspot to isolate the router.
Out of storage / Disk write error A download or install ran out of space or couldn't write

Cause: A full internal drive/SD card, or a corrupt SD card.

Fix:
  1. Free space or install to a microSD card (Settings › Storage).
  2. Reformat the microSD in Settings › System › Format SD Card (backs nothing up — copy games first).
  3. Move games between drives in Storage.
Download stuck / keeps stopping A game download won't progress

Cause: A download-region or cache issue, or sleep interrupting the transfer.

Fix:
  1. Change the download region in Settings › Downloads.
  2. Clear the download cache in Settings › Downloads › Clear Download Cache.
  3. Disable auto-sleep while downloading.
SteamOS update failed A system update didn't apply

Cause: An interrupted update or low space on the system partition.

Fix:
  1. Retry the update on a stable connection with the charger plugged in.
  2. Reboot and check Settings › System for the update again.
  3. If it loops, re-image SteamOS with the official Recovery image.
Black screen / won't boot past logo The Deck hangs on boot

Cause: A failed update or corrupt SteamOS install.

Fix:
  1. Hold Power 10+ seconds to force off, then boot again.
  2. Boot into the Boot Manager (Vol+ Power) to pick a previous OS image.
  3. Use the official SteamOS Recovery image on a USB drive to reinstall.

Fixes that work for most Steam Deck errors

  1. Fully quit the client from the system tray (right-click › Exit), then reopen it — a half-loaded client throws most generic errors.
  2. Restart your PC and router, and on Windows flush DNS (Command Prompt: ipconfig /flushdns).
  3. Update or reinstall the client to the latest version — many 'connection' or 'version' errors are just an out-of-date client.
  4. Temporarily disable VPN and add the client as an exception in your antivirus/firewall, then retry.
  5. Check the service's official status page or its X/Twitter — if the servers are down for maintenance there is no local fix; wait it out.

FAQ

How do I fix Steam Deck error code 118?

Error 118 means the Deck can't reach Steam's servers. Toggle Wi-Fi off and back on (or forget and rejoin your network), move closer to the router since the Deck's antenna is weaker than a laptop's, restart your router, and check the Steam status page in case Steam itself is down.

What do I do about a Steam Deck disk write / out of storage error?

A download ran out of space or couldn't write to the drive. Free space or install to a microSD card via Settings › Storage. If a specific SD card keeps failing, reformat it in Settings › System › Format SD Card (copy your games off first, as this erases it).
