NVIDIA App Error Codes
The NVIDIA App (which replaced GeForce Experience) handles your drivers, overlay and game optimisation — its errors are almost always an NVIDIA service, a driver, or a permissions problem. Here's each code and the fix.
Error codes
Error Code 0x0003
'Something went wrong. Try restarting GeForce Experience/NVIDIA App'
Cause: A stopped NVIDIA service (Telemetry/Display Container) or a broken driver install — the most common NVIDIA App error.
- Open services.msc and set 'NVIDIA Display Container LS' and 'NVIDIA Telemetry Container' to Automatic and Start them.
- Allow the NVIDIA Telemetry service to 'interact with desktop' (Log On tab).
- Reinstall the driver with a clean install (or DDU) and reboot.
Error Code 0x0001
The NVIDIA App can't start correctly
Cause: A permissions/user-profile issue or corrupt app data.
- Run the NVIDIA App as administrator.
- Ensure NVIDIA services are running (see 0x0003).
- Reinstall the NVIDIA App fresh.
Error Code 43 (Device Manager)
Windows stopped the GPU
Cause: A driver fault, loose card, or failing GPU rather than the app itself.
- Clean-reinstall the GPU driver with DDU in Safe Mode.
- Reseat the graphics card and its power cables.
- Test the GPU in another slot/PC to rule out hardware.
Driver installation failed / can't continue
The driver installer aborted
Cause: A conflicting old driver, antivirus interference, or a Windows Update driver clashing.
- Use DDU in Safe Mode to fully remove the old driver, then install fresh.
- Disable antivirus during the install.
- Download the driver directly from nvidia.com rather than through the app.
NVIDIA App won't open / blank window
The app launches to nothing or not at all
Cause: Corrupt app cache or a stopped Display Container service.
- Restart the 'NVIDIA Display Container LS' service.
- Delete the NVIDIA App cache in %LocalAppData%\NVIDIA Corporation and relaunch.
- Reinstall the NVIDIA App.
Overlay / ShadowPlay not working
Alt+Z overlay or recording won't open
Cause: A disabled overlay, a conflicting overlay, or missing permissions.
- Enable the in-game overlay in NVIDIA App settings.
- Close conflicting overlays (Discord, Xbox Game Bar).
- Reinstall to restore the overlay component and reboot.
Fixes that work for most NVIDIA App / GeForce Experience errors
- Fully quit the client from the system tray (right-click › Exit), then reopen it — a half-loaded client throws most generic errors.
- Restart your PC and router, and on Windows flush DNS (Command Prompt: ipconfig /flushdns).
- Update or reinstall the client to the latest version — many 'connection' or 'version' errors are just an out-of-date client.
- Temporarily disable VPN and add the client as an exception in your antivirus/firewall, then retry.
- Check the service's official status page or its X/Twitter — if the servers are down for maintenance there is no local fix; wait it out.
FAQ
How do I fix NVIDIA App / GeForce Experience error code 0x0003?
0x0003 is almost always a stopped NVIDIA service. Open services.msc, set 'NVIDIA Display Container LS' and 'NVIDIA Telemetry Container' to Automatic and start them, and on the Telemetry service's Log On tab tick 'Allow service to interact with desktop'. If it persists, clean-reinstall your GPU driver (DDU) and reboot.
The NVIDIA App won't open at all — what should I do?
Restart the 'NVIDIA Display Container LS' service in services.msc, then delete the app cache folder at %LocalAppData%\NVIDIA Corporation and relaunch. If it's still blank, reinstall the NVIDIA App fresh and reboot so its services re-register.
