BattlEye Error Codes

BattlEye is a kernel-level anti-cheat that launches with the game, so its errors stop you before the menu across every title that uses it. Nearly all are a blocked update, a missing service, or antivirus interference — here's each message and the fix.

Error codes

Failed to update BattlEye service BattlEye couldn't download or apply its update

Cause: A firewall/antivirus block or a corrupt BattlEye install stopping the self-update.

Fix:
  1. Run the game's BattlEye/Install_BattlEye.bat as administrator.
  2. Whitelist the BattlEye folder and BEService in your firewall/AV.
  3. Verify game files so BattlEye is re-downloaded.
BattlEye Query Timed Out The BattlEye backend didn't answer in time

Cause: A blocked connection to BattlEye's servers, a VPN, or a temporary outage.

Fix:
  1. Disable VPN/proxy and allow BEService through the firewall.
  2. Flush DNS (ipconfig /flushdns) and restart the router.
  3. Retry later if BattlEye's servers are down.
BattlEye Client Not Responding The game lost contact with the BattlEye client

Cause: The BEService Windows service stopped, or an overlay/AV killed the process.

Fix:
  1. Reinstall BattlEye via the game's Install_BattlEye.bat.
  2. Close overlays (Discord, RivaTuner, Razer).
  3. Set the BEService service to Automatic in services.msc.
Corrupted Data / Corrupted Memory BattlEye found altered game memory or files

Cause: A mod, trainer, overlay, or overclock corrupting memory the anti-cheat scans.

Fix:
  1. Remove mods/trainers and revert any RAM/GPU overclock.
  2. Verify/repair game files.
  3. Test with all overlays closed.
Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Driver Load Error (1450 / 577) The BattlEye kernel driver couldn't load

Cause: Windows blocked the unsigned/older driver, or Secure Boot/AV interference.

Fix:
  1. Update Windows so BattlEye can load its signed driver.
  2. Reinstall BattlEye as administrator.
  3. Ensure no other anti-cheat driver is conflicting; reboot.
This game is protected by BattlEye and can't run BattlEye refused to start the game

Cause: BattlEye isn't installed for that game, or the launcher started the game without it.

Fix:
  1. Launch the game through its official launcher, not the raw .exe.
  2. Run Install_BattlEye.bat in the game folder.
  3. Reinstall the game's BattlEye component.
Windows Test-Mode / not allowed BattlEye blocks Windows Test Signing mode

Cause: Windows is in Test Mode, which BattlEye rejects to prevent unsigned drivers.

Fix:
  1. Disable Test Mode: admin Command Prompt › bcdedit /set testsigning off, then reboot.
  2. Remove whatever enabled test signing (some tools/drivers do).
  3. Reboot and relaunch.

Fixes that work for most BattlEye errors

  1. Reboot the PC first — anti-cheat drivers load at startup, and a stale session or pending Windows update causes most launch-blocking errors.
  2. Run the game AND its launcher as administrator so the anti-cheat service can install and start its kernel driver.
  3. Verify/repair the game files (Steam: Verify integrity; Epic: Verify) so a corrupt or half-updated anti-cheat module is re-downloaded.
  4. Add the game folder and the anti-cheat executable as exceptions in your antivirus/firewall — third-party AV frequently quarantines the anti-cheat driver.
  5. Update Windows and your GPU driver; anti-cheat blocks known-vulnerable or outdated system components.

FAQ

How do I fix 'Failed to update BattlEye service'?

It's almost always a firewall/AV block or a corrupt install. Run the game's Install_BattlEye.bat (in the game folder's BattlEye subfolder) as administrator, whitelist the BattlEye folder and BEService in your antivirus and firewall, then verify the game files so BattlEye is re-downloaded, and reboot.

Why does BattlEye say the query timed out?

The BattlEye backend didn't respond, usually because a VPN, proxy, or firewall is blocking its connection — or its servers are briefly down. Disable any VPN, allow BEService through your firewall, flush DNS with ipconfig /flushdns, restart your router, and retry.
